Being a DS worker is all about compassion

I work for a community living in residential services, When  I started in this field to be honest it was only going to be temporary until I could find a job that paid well in my field of social work. Fifteen years  later I am still working at the same agency. For many of us DS support workers this job is more than just a job, it’s more than just a pay check, let’s face it this career is not a money making career. I am loyal to the agency I work for because of the people I support, the people I have had the honor of walking beside throughout their lives. I am continually taught things about myself daily I have learned that the term “don’t sweat the small stuff” is a true reality and the term “taking it with a grain of salt” can get you through even the toughest of moments. I live my life with the basic right to do what I want when I want whenever I want. The individuals I support count on me to ensure the they have that right. I take a great deal of honour in knowing my job is about people’s lives and their right to live with the same rights as everybody else.  Although, this career can be very challenging, try my patients, I choose to stay because I actually genuinely care.
